3 Labs Renovation

CUNY Hunter College, New York, NY

Project size : 3,950 SF

Graf & Lewent Architects was retained by CUNY and Hunter College to completely gut three existing labs on three different floors of their landmark building in mid-town Manhattan. One lab containing about 900 square feet was designed for use as a research lab for organic chemistry with an array of utilities including air, gas and vacuum, plus nitrogen gas, distilled water and three low flow high performance fume hoods. The second lab, containing about 1,750 square feet, and was designed for medical research with similar utilities plus a fluorescent microscope room and tissue culture room. The third lab containing 1,300 square feet, was designed for psychological research with four procedural rooms, a wet lab and a laminar flow hood. All the labs received new HVAC systems and fume hood exhausts, which were strategically placed on the roof to minimize the effect on the landmark building. The labs received all new finishes, new casework and lighting.
